From Theory to Practice: RevProHub's Systematic Review Training Reaches 200+ Researchers Across Ethiopia
In just three months, RevProHub's Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis Training has been delivered to more than 200 researchers, academics, and health professionals across Ethiopia — from Addis Ababa to Jigjiga, and now returning home to Jimma University.
From Addis Ababa to Jigjiga, from university lecture halls to regional health bureaus — RevProHub's Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis Training has become a national capacity-building movement. In just three months since launching its first in-person cohort, more than 200 researchers, academics, and health professionals across Ethiopia have completed the program. Now, the journey returns home — to Jimma University, where RevProHub was born.
A Vision Born from PhD Research
RevProHub began with a simple but powerful conviction: that evidence synthesis should not be the privilege of well-funded institutions. It began, quite literally, as PhD research at Jimma University — with a clear goal to transform how systematic reviews and meta-analyses are conducted, making rigorous tools accessible to researchers worldwide.
The platform introduces a User-Guided Analytical Framework — an interactive, educational approach that promotes methodological transparency and informed decision-making. Unlike conventional "opaque" software that produces results without explanation, RevProHub's human-in-the-loop approach empowers users to understand and engage with statistical modeling, bridging the gap between cognitive reasoning and analytical rigor.
Designed for researchers, clinicians, and students, RevProHub breaks down financial and technical barriers — especially for users in low- and middle-income countries. It offers a point-and-click interface for complex meta-analytic methods, integrated workflow support, and full transparency, all at no cost.
From Theory to Practice: The Training Journey
What began as an online session in July 2026 has become a national cascade. Here is the full journey of the program so far:
🌐 July 9, 2026 — The First Online Training
RevProHub's first online training, "Approaches and Challenges in Meta-Analysis," welcomed over 155 participants from 12+ countries — including Ethiopia, Nigeria, Australia, Rwanda, Ghana, Kenya, Belgium, Finland, Somalia, Jamaica, the USA, and the UK. Participants represented more than 27 Ethiopian public universities alongside numerous international service organizations.
Hosted with the facilitation of Jimma University, the session introduced RevProHub to a global audience and featured interactive discussions on rare events, sparse data, and advanced meta-analysis methods — alongside hands-on practice with real-world datasets.
August 9, 2026: Following the successful pilot, the training course developped in collaboration with ESEP was formally accredited with 15 CEU (Continuing Education Units) after fulfilling all required standards criteria.
🏛️ The In-Person Cascade: Seven Cohorts Across Ethiopia
What followed was an institutional expansion that has touched universities, hospitals, regional health bureaus, and professional associations across the country.
| Cohort | Dates | Host Institution | Region |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online | July 9, 2026 | Jimma University (platform) | National + Global |
| Cohort 1 | Aug 17–19, 2026 | Addis Ababa University · CPD Center | Addis Ababa |
| Cohort 2 | Aug 27–29, 2026 | Addis Ababa University | Addis Ababa |
| Cohort 3 | Sep 5–7, 2026 | Haramaya University | Oromia |
| Cohort 4 | Sep 17, 2026 | Addis Ababa University | Addis Ababa |
| Cohort 5 | Sep 24–25, 2026 | Dire Dawa University | Dire Dawa |
| Cohort 6 | Oct 2, 2026 | Harari Regional State Health Bureau | Harari |
| Cohort 7 | Oct 5–7, 2026 | SORPHA + Somali Regional State Health Bureau · IMH Hotel | Somali |
| Cohort 8 | Oct 19–22, 2026 | Jimma University · Institute of Health | Oromia — coming home |
The Impact: Numbers, Reach, and Trajectory
In just three months since the first in-person cohort, the program has achieved:
At the platform level, RevProHub has grown remarkably:
- 450+ registered users (up from 170 in March 2026 — a 2.6× increase in seven months), and currently reached more than 715.
- Adopted across 140 institutions in 17 countries
- MoU signed with Cambia / Lens.org in July 2025 — placing RevProHub alongside globally recognized scholarly infrastructure
- National training manual approved in July 2026, developed in collaboration with the Ethiopian Society of Emergency and Critical Care Professionals (ESEP)
A Pedagogical Breakthrough: From Simulation to Real-World Projects
One of the most significant developments has been a shift in how the training is delivered. From Cohort 7 onwards — beginning in Jigjiga — participants no longer work solely with simulation datasets. They bring their own self-initiated systematic review and meta-analysis projects and take them through real stages of data extraction and analysis with mentor oversight.
"This represents an important step toward our goal: moving from training people about evidence synthesis to enabling them to actually produce evidence."
This shift aligns perfectly with RevProHub's core philosophy: the same platform used for training is the platform used for producing real reviews. Learners emerge from the training already fluent in the tools they will use for their own research.
Multi-Sector Reach: Beyond Academia
The training has reached far beyond university walls. Cohort 7, hosted in Jigjiga, brought together participants from nine institutions spanning academia, research, health services, health systems, professional associations, and international organizations:
- Jigjiga University
- Kabridahar University
- Jigjiga Health Science College
- Somali Public Health Institute
- Somali Region Public Health Association (SORPHA)
- Jigjiga Primary Hospital
- Karamara Hospital
- Somali Regional State Health Bureau (SRHB)
- UNICEF & World Health Organization (WHO)
Such cross-sector participation creates fertile ground for collaboration and for embedding evidence-informed decision-making into health systems — not just in research settings.
Coming Home: Cohort 8 at Jimma University
There was one institution the training had not yet reached: the very place where RevProHub was born. That changes on October 19–22, 2026, when Jimma University hosts the next cohort of the Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis Training.
Interest has been remarkable. Following the call for applications, more than 60 applications were received. Approximately one-third came from PhD students and postdoctoral researchers — a clear signal of the strong demand for advanced evidence-synthesis capacity at Jimma University.
Because each training session accommodates a maximum of 20 participants, not everyone can be accommodated in this first session. Seats have been allocated with the following priority:
- 50% reserved for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers
- 50% allocated to academic and professional staff on a first-come, first-served basis
Selected applicants will be notified by email. Additional sessions are planned for subsequent dates, ensuring broader access for the university community over time.

Looking Forward: E-Learning Platform Now Finalized
Alongside the in-person cascade, RevProHub has finalized and tested its E-Learning Platform for systematic reviews and meta-analysis — purpose-built for academics in Ethiopian higher-education institutions.
This platform represents the next phase of the vision: a scalable, digital learning ecosystem that can reach learners far beyond the cities where in-person cohorts are held. Combined with the 15 CEU accreditation and the national training manual, RevProHub now offers a complete, accredited, digitally delivered evidence synthesis curriculum — available at no cost.
The ambition continues to grow: from individual training cohorts to a wider regional movement for evidence synthesis, research capacity, and evidence-informed decision-making.
